About Diamonds: The Four C's
Carat Weight
This measure of weight calls for each carat to be subdivided into 100 "points" (By comparison, one carat equals l/5th of one gram. All other characteristics being equal, the larger diamond will command the greater price.

The value of a diamond does not increase evenly in comparison to it’s weight. An extreme example is that a 1.00ct diamond is far more valuable than 100 diamonds of .01ct each. The reason for this is that small pieces of rough diamond are far more common than the larger pieces of rough diamond. This leads to diamonds being priced according to weight categories.
For instance, all other characteristics being even a .50ct (half carat category is more valuable than a .48ct by a margin greater than the value of the .02ct in weight difference.
