About Diamonds: The Four C's
Cut
Cut refers to both the shape of the diamond and the proportions of the faceted stone. Diamonds may be cut in round, princess cut, oval, marquise, pear shape, emerald and numerous other shapes.
The proportions of a diamond will affect the diamond's brilliance, and hence its price. Whilst the parameter ranges for “ideal” proportions in round diamonds have been studied mathematically in great depth, other shapes of diamond are assessed with less mathematical detail and a greater reliance on what is most pleasing to the eye.

The cut of a diamond will determine how light is refracted back out and this will determine the fire and brilliance of the stone. A well cut round brilliant cut diamond refracts nearly all the light entering it out of the top (crown) and sides. This results in the form of greater fire and more brilliance.
